AAAUGH!!

I have just found out that my favorite Flickr Buddy is going to stop uploading! I AM DISTRAUGHT!! Seriously... her photos are so great and emotional, and are actually half of the reason I look to see what my "friends" page holds, but alas. There will be no more Roweun for now {:( This is a sad day indeed... This is her, in one of her self-portraits:

In other news, This week has been great for catching up with old friends, and next week promises to be the same. As mentioned before, I got to spend some time with Ginny last weekend, and it's continued from there - On Monday Jen and I went down to the mall, and walked and walked and walked... She'd just gotten a new digicam, and wanted to ty it out on the nation's capital. Our shared photo time was great, not to mention that the weather was GORgeous.

And last night I got to see my neighbor, Scott, who we lived next door to for... uh... 6 or 7 years. He and my brother were inseperable for most of that time. My brother is a lucky man, to have had his best friend right next door!

Also, I began experiments with Resin, and made coasters and little trinket dishes. I was apprehensive going into it because of my past experiences with resin (disaster!) but I came out of it unscathed, and with 4 trinket bowls, and a set of 4 coasters. Well done! *pat my back*

I've realized that I don't like to post wihout pictures. I should start uploading my more recent artwork again, because I feel like... well, I started this blog wanted to put my art up, but I've kinda strayed. Perhaps it can be a new years resolution? We'll just see, won't we? :)

Another highschool find

I didn't remember making this collage until I found it, but this is another one that I did in highschool. I wonder: have I gotten better, worse, or simply changed?? Hmm...!

But blogs are suposed to be about our lives, aren't they? well here. Have a taste of my life - for the past 2 days I have felt like I had to sneeze, but I'm only rarely able to actually do so.

Also, Garth is the best man ever born. Just so you know... He is "surprising" me with the shoes I've been lusting after for the past month (He woke up at 5:30 to go to Tysons on the day after Christmas and buy them for me, but they were out of my size. So he told me about them yesterday, and that I was going to be surprised with them. What a fabulous boyfriend I have!!! I told him that it makes us even because I slipped and told him I was getting him a "surprise" turtle. But that was a stupid mistake that only I could make... not a choice... ^_^)

MERRY FREAKING CHRISTMAS!!!!!

I got many fabulous things from my loving parents - an awesome quasi-bowling-bag overnight bag, new slippers, the coolest led candle from brookstone (you should see it!) - but by far THIS was the highlight:

My brand new Toshiba Satellite® Notebook(M45-S269)!!! 512 ram, 100gb hard drive, multi-layer dvd-rw/cd-rw drive, built in wireless, 15.4 widescreen... the list goes on and on. Oh boy, I love it to pieces! (Sorry, Timoni, I love the PC interface, and Apples are so expensive I don't think I'll be switching over any time soon... ;)

Merry Christmas, everyone ^_^

Holidays and Happiness! - days 6 & 7

This week was stressful, but fulfilling - I FINALLY got my little present for Garth after much horrible dealing with un-sympathetic UPS (they are STUPID!!!) But anyways. The bad part is over now, and my darling Garth has his precious new little pet (named "Tomato", when we discovered that she loves tomatoes!)

After spending time with Garth and Tomato, I got to go visit Ginny in Fredericksburg - It is always so WONDERFUL to see her. She's one of the best people I've ever known (EVER!). Ginny - it's true. ^_^ We are kindred spirits, indeed!

He's in trouble!!

Bunny got into a little scrape this morning! I left him alone for a few minutes, and then I started to hear a scratching noise... lo-and-behold: He dug up my mother's bulbs!!!!

Well, actually we didn't see any bulbs, so either he ate them, or they were deeper than he got. But either way, whoa boy, did he make a mess! but we found out how much he loves to play in dirt, so I'm going to make him a little dirt-pit in the corner of his cage for him to get dirty in (too bad he's a white rabbit :)

He is so cute! It slays me!!

M vs H, Day 4

This morning: Shopping.

This afternoon: Cleaning.

This evening: Lazing.

Just now: Discovering**.

**I have just 'discovered' the Irish band "Bell x1". They are, in a word: AMAZING. It's not stretching the imagination to say that they are, perhaps, a new favorite. I will be trying to get ahold of their new album, "Flock", ASAP. And I mean A.S.A.P.

Everybody listen to them if you get a chance. They are uber-great. Especially lovely are - 'Just Like Mr. Ben', 'My first born for a song', and 'Alphabet Soup'. ALL of the songs I've managed to get my hands on in the past 1/2 hour or so are great, but these were my favorites.

not necessarily *good*, but I liked it.

Sometimes I wonder at what the heck 'Launch' is thinking - like when I rate "never play artist again', yet they continue to feed me the newest Dave Matthews and J.Lo music. Uhg!

But, perhaps, they get it right once in a rare while. They just played this video of a girl named 'KT Tunstall'. The music was catchy enough, but what was so cool is that she was recording the music and adding layers as she sang live on some tv show like Conan (except not Conan). It had the effect of a band - or at the very least, back-up singers with a tambourine - and I found myself impressed.

That's all. You can check the video out or not. Someone like Timoni probably won't like it, but someone like Ginny might. So. There it is.

And yes, I like Fiona Apple and Beck, but WHY DO THEY KEEP PLAYING ONLY THEM tonight? Variety, please :)

Marianne vs the Holidays, day 3

A) Well, yesterday I went to work, cleaned out my room some, and then... just... kinda hung out. I didn't feel much like cleaning by the time I came home from work though, because I'd spent much of the day organizing fabrics in CORE's resource library, and despite the fact that I *like* organizing at CORE (it exposes me to all sorts of cool products & finishes), the thought of more organizing was... well, less-than-appealing, I guess.

B) But today was ALL CLEANING!!! And man, oh man, did I get a lot done. Those of you who had seen my "craft room" previous to this afternoon will likely be stunned - that's mainly Garth, Drea, Rebecca, and Corcoran. Other people will have to take my word for it: it was c-r-a-z-y. But now it's clean:

C) Also today: I kept reading in "Watership Down", which I started yesterday because "wow, I've never actually read that". I'm on chapter 15; it's pretty easy reading, but still - saying I'm on chapter 15 is sort of like saying I'm on Psalm 25. The chapters are short, and there are 50 of them. Basically I'm on page 100 out of about 475.

D) ALLLLLSO, I spent this evening in cozy bliss with some tea and my Moleskine at Murky Coffee. I doodled and sketched, and wrote a bunch of quotes down from my 'Modern Architecture & Design' book. And then I came home, watched several hours of TV, and wrapped gifts **HOORAH!!**

And to change the subject abruptly...

I've just found out that Jason Mraz has a song called "Geek in Pink" or something like that, and somehow I find myself taking offense at his self-proclaimed geekdom. He is not a geek. He is a frat boy. Geeks are awesome people obsessed with odd or quirky things. He is obsessed with Beer and Sex, neither of which is either odd OR quirky. And, furthermore, he is not awesome. Harumph.

Also oddly offensive to me was this: when I was at B&N I saw a copy of "Pride and Prejudice" - or, rather, many copies - on the "New Fiction" table, whose covers had the movie poster from the new movie w/Kiera Knightly. Now, I didn't dislike the movie, but in all fairness, this is OLD fiction, which all of us with culture know. Also with it was Memoirs of a Geisha. Also not new fiction! In fact, it has been on my Favorites list since it actually *was* a new release and I read it in 1999. I mean, I know I'll love the movie, because the story is a-m-a-z-i-n-g, but I don't like the new cover on that either, thank you. And the same goes with the new digitalized Aslan head on Chronicles of Narnia even though I really liked the movie.

Why do these things offend me? I don't know. There are more important things I could worry about... but then again I've never claimed to be normal!

And the pictures of the weekend are...

Garth took me out for DELICIOUS tapas this weekend! This is my fishy, with a lemon-seed eye, about to gobble potatoes...

I picked my parents up at Dulles tonight. Throughout all of my world travel, this airport remains one of my favorite. Its interior is so vast and cavernous - I feel like I'm in the belly of a beast, and at night there's always a beautiful glow that moves across the ceiling...

Marianne versus the holidays, day 1

Today was what I'd consider my first day of the holidays. Yesterday was my first *free* day, but that was basically catching up on holiday shopping and sleep, and although very enjoyable and fun, I don't think of it as actual vacation time.

So: today I began my holidays with laziness (which I'm hoping to NOT continue) - I basically spent 5 hours reading design magazines and making jewelry at the grounds (actually "Murky Coffee"...). Now I've come home and begun a thorough re-organizing of my room, which I hope to have finished by Wednesday afternoon. That is first on my order of things to do: ORGANIZE the enormous surplus of art supplies and projects strewn about my home.

Other things on my list of "what I want to acheive during my month off" include:

1. museums, museums, museums.
2. Submiting a project to an ID competition.
3. Organizing, photographing, and sending off submissions of my sofites to various independent toy stores.
4. Finishing the painting I've been working on for 6 months.
5. Have slides taken of my paintings and submit them to various shows.
6. um... I know there was a 6...

  • Glades Herp Inc.

  • On this website, you can buy...

The Russian Tortoise (starting at $55):

The Redfoot Tortoise (starting at $95):

    - these turtles have their own book ("practical care & maintenance of the redfoot tortoise"). Apparently they have vocalizations - ie, talk - but they also get pretty big... like... a foot in diameter or something (after 20 years or something). Also go here for these guys:
    http://www.pingleton.com/redfoot/redfoots.htm

The Yellowfoot Tortoise (starting at $125):

The Ornate Box Turtle ($35, and they have 12 of them... ;)

    The peninsula cooter ($15):

    A Nile Crocodile ($400)

    This picture SLAYS me!!!

An Albino American Alligator ($150,000) - ps, this website is officially illegal!

But the main reason I've sent you to this page is so that you can see a big list of available-for-pets tortoises. You may not want to actually get it from them because they seem a bit pricey on the tortoises that you'd want (as opposed to the aquatic turtles that they're selling for round-about $25), and there are tons of dealers all over the place online.

Also: my research has turned up a surprisingly large amount of herp. conventions in this area; probably about one a month within a couple hours driving distance. We should try to go to one next month once you decide what you want to get. Apparently breeders will sometimes take orders and show up at the convention with your pet, set aside for you to pick up. Hmmm!

In case you don't follow Japan...

The fantabulous nation of Nippon has once again declared United States' Beef to be safe for Japanese consumption!

I believe 'Yoshinoya' will be happy-Happy-HAPPY! (as would I, if I was living in Japan. Who wants to eat a cow that wasn't born in Texas? I ASK YOU!!!!)

Last night was for TREE DECORATING!

Lindsey, Laura, Timoni, Kim, and Garth all trekked through chilly weather to congregate at my house and decorate our Christmas tree (in honor of Saturday's quickly approaching party)! Timoni took these pictures - I'd post the ones I took of her in return, but they mostly came out all blurry... and not that COOL kind of blurry ^_^

Guys, Help, help! I have lights to pass to you! Over here - behind the tree!!!
    :)

    What I just learned.

When wolves are out hunting together, only an average of 1 out of 10 attacks is sucessful. Because of this, they eat ALOT when they kill - in one meal, after a kill, a wolf can eat the equivalent of 88 hamburgers.

    THAT'S A LOT OF MEAT!!

    Stumble don't fall

I fell upon some drawings I did in highschool and college when looking for a few charcoal nudes I'd drawn. Here are a few.

    1. McGee, all snuggled in her basket. I drew this, pointilism style, in spring of 1998. I lost the photo, so I never got to finish it.

    2. Our Dining Room table in pointilism. This one I DID finish because I was drawing it from life (it took forEVAH).

    3. Another from Spring of 1998. This was my tennis coach's doggie. She was so-so-sooooo cute and friendly. But she had to wear this muzzle thing at matches (this is probably one of my best drawings from highschool).

    4. A self-portrait of me as a kid. I *think* this is from a project I did around January 1998.

    5. The tower of London. This was from May of 1999 on one of our yearly Brit-Trips. I got started early sketching architecture!

    6. Probably my favorite sketch from my whole semester of Life Drawing in Spring 2000. I love the soft lines and the way the background bleeds into the figure.

Anyway. There are a gazillion more. I just thought it was interesting to see what I was doing in highschool. The humble beginnings of an artist...
